Pearland, Friendswood and Brazoria County are not one market. Here is how to compare communities, verify licenses, plan for storms and find the public programs a parent can use today.

Quick answer: Pearland, Friendswood and the rest of Brazoria County are close enough to Houston that many families treat them as one search, but the options, the public programs and the storm risks differ from the Harris County side. Assisted living across Greater Houston has run roughly $3,200–$7,800 a month as a range, and your own written quote is the only number that counts. Before touring, check each community's license and inspection record on the HHSC provider search, and call the Houston-Galveston Area Council Area Agency on Aging about meals, rides and help at home.

Why a Brazoria County search is different

Families usually arrive here for one of two reasons. Either a parent already lives in Pearland or Friendswood and wants to stay near a church, a doctor and neighbors, or an adult child lives here and wants a parent close. Both are good reasons, and both are really questions about distance. A community that looks perfect on a website but sits forty minutes from the one family member who visits on weeknights will not get visited.

Brazoria County stretches from the suburban edge of Houston in Pearland south through Alvin, Manvel and Angleton toward the coast. Friendswood sits mostly in Galveston County with a piece in Harris County, which is why we group it here with Pearland as families do. Treat each town as its own market, because the number of communities, the commute to the Texas Medical Center and the nearest hospital all change as you move south.

Three questions to answer before you tour anyone

  1. Which hospital and doctors does your parent already use? Changing communities is hard enough without also changing a cardiologist.
  2. Who will visit most often, and from where? Draw the drive time from that person's home, not from the community's address.
  3. What level of care is needed now, and what is likely in a year? A parent who needs medication reminders is a different search from one who needs hands-on help with transfers or has advancing dementia.

Comparing options without trusting a headline price

We do not publish a median price for Pearland, Friendswood or any single Houston-area city. The most reliable cost data we know of is published at the state level, and city-level figures from listing sites are often built from a handful of communities. What we can say is that the range we use across Greater Houston for assisted living, $3,200–$7,800 a month, is a range, and where a community lands inside it depends on the apartment, the care level and the fee structure.

What to ask for in writing

  • The base monthly rate and exactly what it includes.
  • How care levels are priced, and what triggers a move to a higher level.
  • Any community or entrance fee, and whether any of it is refundable.
  • What happens if your parent needs more care than the community is licensed to provide.
  • How and how often rates have increased, as the community itself describes it.

Verify the license before you fall in love

Every assisted living facility in Texas should hold a license from the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, and the provider search shows inspection and violation history. Our step-by-step guide to the HHSC provider search shows where to click, and the Type A vs Type B explainer covers what the license means for staffing. For details like amenities, memory care and move-in requirements, use the operator's own website. Aggregator pages are fine for finding names, but they can be out of date.

Public help a Brazoria County parent can use

A move is not always the answer. Some families need a few months of support while they decide, and some parents are safer and happier at home with the right help. These are the starting points, and you should confirm eligibility and cost directly because programs change.

  • Houston-Galveston Area Council Area Agency on Aging. H-GAC runs the regional Area Agency on Aging, which lists Brazoria County providers on its senior service provider page. It is the best single first call for meals, rides and information. The toll-free number is 1-800-437-7396.
  • Actions of Brazoria County. H-GAC lists this nonprofit, based at 309 West Sealy in Alvin, as a Brazoria County senior service provider offering congregate meals, home-delivered meals, transportation and information and assistance. The listed contact number is 979-849-6132. We have not verified service hours, eligibility rules or cost, so ask.
  • Pearland Meals on Wheels. A local Pearland page describes the program as serving adults 18 and older who are disabled, chronically ill or frail and unable to shop or cook for themselves, and gives an enrollment line of 281-485-5081. That page does not state a cost, and it is not a government site, so confirm the details by phone.

If your parent is already in a community and you have concerns about care, the long-term care ombudsman is an outside advocate separate from the facility. The Area Agency on Aging can point you to the right contact.

A note on Friendswood senior programs

You may find old news about city senior programs in Friendswood being closed. The article we found dates from March 2020, at the start of the pandemic, and does not describe today's programs. Call the city directly to ask what is offered now rather than relying on an old announcement or an aggregator page.

Storm and flood planning is part of the decision

Brazoria County sits in the Gulf Coast hurricane and flood region, and the risk grows as you head south toward the coast. When you compare communities, ask where residents go during an evacuation or a power outage, whether the building has a generator and what it powers, and how families are told what is happening. If your parent uses oxygen or dialysis, those answers are not optional. Our hurricane and power-outage planning guide goes through the questions. In Texas, 2-1-1 maintains the State of Texas Emergency Assistance Registry for people who may need help in a disaster; ask 2-1-1 how to register a parent.

Paying for care

Many families assume Medicaid will pay for assisted living, and in Texas the picture is more specific than that. Read our guide to the STAR+PLUS HCBS interest list, which is honest about waiting and what the program does and does not cover, and our comparison of nursing facility Medicaid and the STAR+PLUS waiver. Veterans should also look at Aid & Attendance.

How we help

Houston Senior Advisor does not charge families to talk through options. If you are weighing Pearland, Friendswood, Alvin or anywhere else in Brazoria County, call us at (346) 385-3815. We will ask about your parent's care needs, budget and where the family lives, and then help you build a short list worth touring.

Common questions

Is there a median cost for assisted living in Pearland?
We do not publish one, and we do not know of a reliable city-level median. Across Greater Houston we describe assisted living as roughly $3,200 to $7,800 a month, a range that depends on the apartment, the care level and fees. Ask each community for a written fee schedule.
How do I check whether a Pearland or Friendswood assisted living facility is licensed?
Use the Texas Health and Human Services Commission long-term care provider search. It shows license status and inspection and violation history. Our step-by-step guide walks through each click.
Where can a parent in Brazoria County get home-delivered meals or rides?
Start with the Houston-Galveston Area Council Area Agency on Aging at 1-800-437-7396. It lists Actions of Brazoria County in Alvin (979-849-6132) as a provider of congregate meals, home-delivered meals, transportation and information and assistance. Confirm eligibility, hours and cost directly.
Should hurricanes affect which community I choose?
Yes. Brazoria County is in the Gulf Coast storm and flood region. Ask each community about its evacuation plan, generator capacity and family notification, especially if your parent uses oxygen or dialysis.
Does Medicaid pay for assisted living in Texas?
Not in the way many families expect. Medicaid coverage depends on the program, and the STAR+PLUS HCBS waiver can have a long interest list. Read our STAR+PLUS and nursing facility Medicaid guides before making financial plans.
